In the lower Bregaglia valley, nestling between the picturesque villages of Soglio, Bondo and Castasegna, lie Europe’s most extensive chestnut groves. The fruit from these splendid trees is harvested every year in October. This is a special time in the calendar of the valley, and it is celebrated wholeheartedly by the locals. Part of this tradition is the Chestnut Festival, which this year will take place from 25 September to 24 October with a wide-ranging programme including guided tours, tasting sessions and culinary-themed walks, as well as readings and presentations. And of course, there will be various other parties and celebrations to enjoy as well.

Every year in late autumn, in an event rather like an autumnal Easter egg hunt, Lake Sils presents visitors with its famous larch balls. It is a phenomenon which is found nowhere else. These unusual creations of nature appear every autumn when the larch trees shed their needles – they drop into the lake, where the action of the waves shapes them into furry balls. A local myth has it that during a period of famine, trolls gave food to the people of Sils – safely wrapped in larch balls. They placed the balls in the water and the wind coming down from the Maloja pass blew them towards Sils and its starving villagers. So now is the perfect time to investigate the legend of the larch balls!
