Every year in late autumn, in an event rather like an autumnal Easter egg hunt, Lake Sils presents visitors with its famous larch balls. It is a phenomenon which is found nowhere else. These unusual creations of nature appear every autumn when the larch trees shed their needles – they drop into the lake, where the action of the waves shapes them into furry balls. A local myth has it that during a period of famine, trolls gave food to the people of Sils – safely wrapped in larch balls. They placed the balls in the water and the wind coming down from the Maloja pass blew them towards Sils and its starving villagers. So now is the perfect time to investigate the legend of the larch balls!

There is rustling and roaring in the Swiss National Park… In the Val Trupchun, the valley in the National Park with the densest population of game, large numbers of stags can be spotted during the rutting season at the end of September, and their bellowing can be heard from far away. Other animals such as chamois, ibex and marmots are also particularly active in the autumn and, with a little bit of luck and patience, you can observe them here in their natural habitat.
